A Brief History of SASCU

Save Street Children Uganda (SASCU) is a national not for profit, Non-Governmental Organization working for the protection and rehabilitation of street children, as well as disadvantaged children and youth in Uganda, enabling them to realize and fulfill their potentials and dreams. SASCU is a legally registered agency operating in Uganda under the registration number S.5914/8163.

SASCU comprises of former street children and professionals who are moved by the plight of street children who have agreed to bind their efforts to protect the rights of street children, save those who are already on the streets and restore their hope and potentials, and to protect vulnerable children from joining street life.

SASCU has its activities concentrated in central and western regions of Uganda where there are overwhelmingly high number of children living on streets either independently or with ‘street families’, living in extremely appalling conditions in slums around the cities and those who are vulnerable due to various reasons, particularly children who have fled from the poverty and conflict ridden regions, children who are orphaned or are infected with HIV/AIDS and those who are grossly mistreated/ abused in their homes by parents/ guardians..`

Established in 2005 as a child protection agency to respond to the growing crisis of street children and other vulnerable children, SASCU has expanded its work for the benefit of children on the street and other vulnerable children/households. Currently, we focus on: Psychosocial support, Rescue and Rehabilitation, Reconciliation and Re-integration, Child Protection, Sexuality education &HIV-AIDS prevention and Impact mitigation, Child and Family Economic Empowerment, Community Self Help Groups Advocacy and Awareness Creation, and Transferable livelihood skills and talent development

SASCU exists to advocate for the rights and restore hope among children living on the street, ex-street children and other vulnerable children so that they live a meaningful life through contributing to their socio-economic welfare.
