My name is Innocent Byaruhanga Oburye. I am Founder and Director of Save Street Children Uganda (SASCU), a calling God has put on my heart. I spent 9 years of my childhood living on the streets of Kampala, eating from garbage bins and sleeping in the cold. In 1999, a missionary shared the love of Jesus with me and took me in from the dangerous, harsh conditions that had been my life of homelessness. I accepted Christ and God set me on a new path. Little did I know then that God would begin preparing me to be His instrument of change for many other vulnerable children.

The vision of SASCU started in 2005 with 9 street children staying with me in a small room that had no ventilation or windows. God has grown it greatly! We have rescued and reintegrated many children from the street. Currently we have 54 resident children at our children’s home who are safe, cared for, able to attend school and achieve an education and most importantly learn about the love of Christ. These children have a bright future, filled with hope. We have a primary school that reaches out to the surrounding slum community with a quality, Christian based education along with providing two meals a day. Being an ex-street child, I know the despair, hopelessness, condemnation and misconceptions that they face. Because of my life experience on the streets, God has placed a strong desire in me to be an advocate for justice for His children.

Many of these children do not have sponsors and literally depend on sponsorship to ensure they will be able to continue their education. I hope God touches your heart as he has mine and gives you a desire to help educate, protect, and equip ex-street and other vulnerable children. May we, as obedient followers, plead the case of the orphan (Jeremiah 5:28), defend them (Psalms 82:3, Isaiah 1:17), not deprive them justice (Deuteronomy 24:17) and look after them (James 1:27).

Would you join our efforts in the work God is doing and be an instrument of change in defense of the fatherless?
